Famous Original Ray’s Pizza – Midtown West (New York, NY)

With a plethora of Ray’s Pizza joints around New York City, it’s difficult to know who’s the best and who’s the original establishment. Variations include Famous Ray’s, Original Ray’s, Famous Original Ray’s, Original Famous Ray’s, Fred’s Ray’s, and even NOT Ray’s in Brooklyn!

Apparently, the oldest is believed to be Ray’s in Little Italy (27 Prince Street) which opened in 1959. However, there doesn’t seem to be a general consensus as to the legitimate original.

We were starving from all the Big Apple sightseeing tours and stopped at Famous Original Ray’s Pizza (on 7th Ave & 54th St.) in Midtown West. Not the tidiest restaurant, but it was very busy, had lots of pizzas to choose from, and provided quick & efficient service.

Both slices consisted of thin, crunchy and flavorful crusts, adequate amounts of delicious veggie toppings, light on the cheese and light on the tomato sauce. Not the cheapest pizza slices in New York City (these were around $5.50 each), but certainly fresh!
