Highland House Winery & Bistro at Roost Farm Centre

The Roost Farm Centre is one of our favorite places to eat on Vancouver Island because they provide tasty food made with fresh local ingredients — most grown right on property at Highland House Farm.

Open seasonally from June trough September, Highland House Winery & Bistro serves organic restaurant fare with a local focus and a “passionate farm experience”. The bistro showcases their own 100% estate grown wines, cocktails, and menu items ranging from fresh wild fish to local poultry to gourmet, thin crust pizzas from flour milled and grown on site.

During our visit, we ordered a few meals to-go. Entrees were served with a choice of two out of six different side dishes, so we tried one of each! Green Farm Salad – Fresh Roost garden greens and other greens from their friendly neighboring farms, with seasonal veggies topped with a sweet and tangy local berry dressing.

Caesar Salad – A twist on the original, young romaine leaves, dipped in their homemade dressing, topped with Parmigiano Reggiano, lemon, bacon pieces and focaccia bread croutons.

Potato Salad – Baby potatoes, roasted yams, hard boiled eggs, red onions, fresh chives, tossed in house aioli.

Roast Chicken ($15.00) – Organic BC Raised, free-range Cornish game hen, wood fire oven roasted with lemon and rosemary. Roasted Potatoes – Baby nugget potatoes, extra virgin olive oil, rosemary and baked garlic, wood oven roasted to perfection. Wood Fired Garlic Bread – Their house baked focaccia bread with garlic infused clarified butter, toasted in their own wood fired oven.

Ratatouille – Wood oven roasted eggplant, zucchini, tomato, onion and forest mushrooms topped with fresh Roost grown basil.

Salmon ($16.00) – Wild BC Salmon fillet grilled and finished with lemon caper butter.

We also ordered two desserts with our meals: Roost Fruit Pie ($6.00) – Their famous Roost made-from-scratch flaky crust filled with fresh berries and served with a scoop of local vanilla ice cream. Highland House Signature Smores ($6.00) – Soft marshmallows melted between two Fudge Brownie cookies in the wood fired oven, topped with caramel sauce.

Overall, Highland House Winery & Bistro at the Roost Farm Centre serves great meals with fresh, tasty ingredients. Prices might seem a little steep, but you must remember you’re paying for local produce, mostly organic products and supporting a Vancouver Island establishment!
