International House Of Pancakes – IHOP Vancouver (Fairview) Review

I noticed an “IHOP Coming Soon” sign on West Broadway (near Oak) last month and got really excited. We won’t have to drive to my favourite location on No. 3 Road, or their other one in Richmond, or even Burnaby to get my pancake fix! If you know me, you know I love my breakfast food. Sure, plenty of restaurants in Van serve decent hotcakes, but something about IHOP keeps me coming back for more. I think it’s the countless ways you can top your breakfast treats, and the dollops of real whipped cream BC International House Of Pancakes offer. (Although not all IHOPs are created equal: IHOPs I’ve been to in Washington state, specifically, use some sort of whipped “topping”, like a Cool Whip type of unpleasant edible oil product). Another reason I love IHOP is how they place a carafe of coffee on your table, so you can pour yourself bottomless cups untill you get the shakes from all the caffeine! Love it.

Apparently this location has been open for almost a month now. Not sure how we didn’t notice earlier that they were open because I’ve been keeping my eye on their signage…Anyway, we had breakfast there on Saturday, and yesterday as well. Our fantastic server on Saturday mentioned that IHOP’s limited-time special menu would be available again starting this week. Two eggs, two strips of bacon, hashbrowns, and two pancakes with toppings cost me over $10 on Saturday, but only cost $5.99 on Tuesday with the special menu. Score!

Our Saturday visit was perfection. Service was quick, friendly, and very attentive. Waiters worked as a team to clean plates and run orders, and delicious food was coming out of the kitchen very quickly. The restaurant itself (because it’s brand new) was impeccably clean, and it’s a large, bright, and spacious dining room. Coffee was fresh and didn’t let us down.

Two eggs over-easy (and two eggs over-hard pictures right) with extra crispy bacon (straight from the deep fyer) and generous amounts of crisp hashbrowns.

Thanks to our server on Saturday, and IHOP’s Pancake Revolution: Pancakes To The People that sends me emails, we found out about their enticing specials. For a limited time (now until the end of October), they’re currently offering Caramel Apple Sensations to welcome the apple harvest. Advertised as “My New BFF (Best Flavours Forever)”, Caramel Apple Sensations are served as combos ($5.99/$6.99/$7.99 depending on the number of eggs and amount of meat) with eggs, hashbrowns, and hearty ham, crisp bacon or savory sausage. Tart apples perfectly complemented with sweet caramel top these new breakfast selections – so we had to sample some during our Tuesday visit:

  • Caramel Apple Crisp Crepe: A light egg batter crepe with sweet cream cheese filling topped with roasted apples, crunchy honey granola, rich caramel sauce and whipped cream.
  • Apple Fritter: A warm apple fritter topped with cinnamon apple compote, rich caramel sauce and heavenly whipped cream.
  • Caramel Apple Pancakes: Two golden buttermilk pancakes, topped with roasted apples, rich and sweet caramel sauce and whipped cream.

Despite the fact the restaurant was completely packed during our second visit for Tuesday brunch, service was still excellent, and food was delicious. FYI: Everyday kids eat free at this IHOP location if they are 12 and under. Children can get 1 free kids’ menu item per adult entree purchased from 4pm to 8pm. And pay parking is available behind the restaurant (alley between West Broadway & West 10th Ave.), but IHOP will reimburse you.
