Edible Flours is a new natural vegan bakery located on West Broadway & Vine (beside London Drugs), in Kitsilano. This open-concept chic little shop bakes all of its delectable goodies on site. Although it is a relatively small space, a couch, and tables and chairs are provided for both inside and outdoor seating.
Organic agave syrup is offered for coffee & tea – an excellent sugar substitute, and a great vegan alternative to honey. It has a low glycemic index, so it offers natural sweetness without the blood sugar spike, and it’s 25% sweeter than sugar, so you need less of it. I’m currently enjoying this exact product in my coffee right now. (We purchase ours from Costco, and often Costco in Washington state where it’s half the price).
Since this is a vegan bakery, all of its treats (cookies, muffins, cupcakes, scones, donuts, etc.) are natural as well as dairy and egg free. But they don’t stop there – Edible Flours offers even more healthy choices like gluten-free, wheat-free, soy-free and even sugar-free options. Bursting with organic ingredients and unrefined sweeteners their treats are “full of flavour while gentle on your conscience”. Additionally, their prices are incredibly reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients used.
We tried their chocolate cookie ($1.50), chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting ($3), soy-free raspberry love muffin ($2.50) and chocolate scone ($2.50). The chocolate marbled scone had an unexpected cake-like texture, as opposed to a dry and crumbly scone. Soft with slightly tangy fresh raspberries, and fragrant cloves, the muffin was superb. And the chocolate brownie-like cookie was decadently delicious.
I was very excited to try their cupcakes, because who doesn’t love cupcakes?! With so many cupcake shops in Vancouver, I’ve never been blown away by any of them. I’ve found their textures to be usually dry, like they’ve been sitting around for days. However, Edible Flours cupcakes are different. This freshly baked, gooey chocolate stuffed cupcake with peanut butter frosting (pictured in the above photo) was divine – exceptionally luscious, rich chocolate flavour topped with soft ‘n creamy nutty icing. I’ve never experience a cupcake so moist and delicious, let alone a vegan one.
Considering this bakery is just around the corner from us, it just might become our new regular haunt. I encourage you to try Edible Flours — you won’t believe their tasty goodies are actually vegan!
