Trafiq Café & Bakery kindly hosted Eating in Vancouver last week, where we had the opportunity to sample some delectable baked goods and beverages.
Situated in a prime location on Main Street, near King Ed, what struck us on arrival was how beautifully the café was designed – from marble-topped tables to chic black and white bistro chairs to wire whisk lamps – high attention to detail was clearly employed when choosing its decor.
To start, we enjoyed two strong Americanos with plenty of crema created with URBANBEAN’s Sea To Sky espresso, by Los Beans Trading Co. Ltd. The Vancouver company locally roasts organic, rainforest alliance, estate certified, fairly traded, and bird friendly coffee beans which is the strictest of the third-party environmental standards.
However, if coffee is not your thing, Trafiq offers beer and a selection of wines by the glass which would pair nicely with cheese & charcuterie plates or paninis and made to order sandwiches on your choice of artisan breads. All of their signature breads are hand made in-house over a 3 day period using natural leavening methods, and baked fresh daily.
To accompany our delicious drinks, we sampled a Chunky Monkey ($3.25) – A Trafiquer favourite, this decadent bread pudding contains banana pieces and chocolate chunks swirled throughout. A heavenly treat that we’ll certainly return to indulge in again!
And a Pain au Chocolat ($2.50) – Literally translating to chocolate bread, this popular light and flaky French puff pastry is gently dusted with confectioner’s sugar and contains two pieces of high-quality, dark chocolate in its centre.
Even though our visit was complimentary, we enjoyed Trafiq so much that we decided to purchase some love-themed desserts to take home. With so many incredible looking treats to choose from, like a glorious red velvet cake and heart & key shaped valentine cookies, it was difficult to make a decision.
We finally chose a Bleeding Heart ($4.50 each, or 2 for $7.50) – Baked especially for Valentine’s Day, this decadent dessert contains rich, creamy chocolate mousse with a sweet red berry centre and a crunchy chocolate base. Pictured in the above photos, we cut the heart in half to reveal its “bleeding” middle. Oh my heavens was this mousse ever amazing-I hope Trafiq keeps it as a regular menu item!
We also ordered a Strawberry Mascarpone Tart ($3.50) – Sweet pink heart swirls in smooth and creamy mascarpone cheese nestled in a buttery shortcrust. When we arrived home, we noticed a Killer Brownie ($2.50) was included in our box! Extra dense, with a fudge-like texture and bursting with bold chocolaty flavour. If you’re looking for a lovely French style café with delectable baked goods, terrific espresso, and exceptional service then look no further than Trafiq Café & Bakery on Vancouver’s Main Street.
