We were kindly invited to YEW Restaurant + Bar in downtown Vancouver’s Four Seasons Hotel to attend a Mexican Wine & Tequila Tasting media event with leading wine expert and award-winning author, Mark Oldman. The media event, which took place last Thursday, previewed the upcoming FOOD & WINE Festival in Mexico–the only FOOD & WINE Festival in Latin America.
Mark Oldman, who regularly speaks to sold-out audiences at top gastronomic events, will travel to Mexico’s Pacific Coast paradise of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo this March to participate in the FOOD & WINE Festival alongside celebrity chefs Michael Symon and Marcus Samuelsson.
Upon our arrival to the intimate invite-only event at the gorgeous YEW Restaurant + Bar, we were welcomed with glasses of champagne and delicious appetizers including Carpaccio Gougeres (shaved tenderloin, black pepper lime dressing & parmesan), Arancini (rice balls fried and coated with breadcrumbs), Crab Tacos (dungeness crab, radish sprouts, avocado), and perfectly seared Scallops (crispy prosciutto, red & yellow pepper romesco, marcona almonds).
Throughout the evening, Mark Oldman provided a fascinating, palate-expanding journey of the distinctive wines and spirits of Mexico. Mark shared exceptional wine selections from the increasingly popular Baja California region and Guadalupe Valley.
During the event, we learned about and tasted wines from the legendary Bodegas de Vino Santo Tomas winery, as well as wines from the renowned winemakers of Viticultura Unida (VTU). The informative and thoroughly entertaining event was capped by sampling Partida’s premium tequila and tasting a glass of mezcal, a smoky, complex Mexican spirit.
While “drinking bravely” and absorbing all of Mark’s wine “nuggets” of knowledge, we thought this festival preview was the best wine tasting even we have ever attended. If you get the chance to travel to the upcoming FOOD & WINE Festival, taking place March 22nd through 24th, 2012 in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Mexico, then you should certainly attend! You’ll experience 32 Tastes. 1 History. 1 Soul. And with 340 days of sun per year and a stunning tropical coastline, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo will gratify the most discerning traveler.
