Hop City Brewing Co. is an award-winning craft brewery in Ontario and the brainchild of brewmasters Kevin Gray and John Gagliardi, two longtime brewers who created Hop City’s first recipe in 2009 – Barking Squirrel Lager.
“Our original brew. A lager unlike any other. Smooth, crisp and balanced Barking Squirrel Lager is like an angel dancing on your tongue, well maybe more like a squirrel but tasty nonetheless.”
Barking Squirrel is an amber lager with a distinct rich burnt orange colour and subtle noble hop aroma from a blend of Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Saaz hops. Crisp and mostly dry, its medium body and pleasant hop bitterness make it smooth and drinkable with a slight hop aftertaste. It has an aroma of toasted caramel malts with a floral hop quality.
Hop City’s flagship beer is an eastern Canadian favourite as the winner of the People’s Choice Award and Silver Medal at the 2010 Ontario Brewing Awards, along with a Silver at the 2010 Canadian Brewing Awards. Hop City’s Barking Squirrel is also beginning to garner international recognition, recently winning the World Beer Award for The America’s Best Standard Lager and Two Grand Gold medals at the Monde Selection in Brussels, Belgium.
