Cactus Club (Broadway & Granville) Review
by Taya on May 22nd, 2010

The Cactus Club stepped up their game when Iron Chef, Rob Feenie signed on as their “Food Concept Architect”.

I admire his ambition to use as many locally sourced products as possible. It’s better for the environment, supports the local economy and is more nutritious, since produce is picked later.

We stopped by the Cactus Club at their Broadway and Granville location since it was right beside the optometrist office we were … Read More

Simply French Review
by Taya on May 19th, 2010

After a vigorous tennis match for mother’s day, we brought my parents to Simply French for a quick bite to eat. Simply French is a café located on West 10th, in the Point Grey area of Vancouver. They offer free wifi and free parking can be found on the street. They serve soups, paninis, coffee, pastries, etc. And even have a little area with toys and coloring books … Read More

Giovane Café Review
by Taya on May 17th, 2010

The Fairmont Pacific Rim, located in downtown Vancouver is stunning.  Carrera marble floors, walls and pillars would normally look ostentatious, however the design is über calming, modern, and sophisticated. We would suggest definitely wandering the hotel when you come to eat!

Giovane Café is a chic cafe + bakery + deli located inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim, offering a great assortment of espresso, pastries, paninis, and pizza.  … Read More

Toshi Sushi Review
by Taya on May 14th, 2010

Toshi is a small Japanese restaurant on 16th, near Main Street. They don’t take reservations and the restaurant is only open from 5-10pm.  You have to stand in line before it opens to get a seat…or you’ll need to put your name on the list and prepare to wait for a while.

We waited in line for about 15 minutes. Now, our thoughts on the food:

The miso soup came … Read More

Pekoe Tea Lounge Review
by Taya on May 6th, 2010

We had plans to meet friends at Steeps Tea House on Broadway & Laurel, but upon arrival we discovered that it is now called Pekoe Tea Lounge!

Pekoe isn’t the kind of place to work on your Macbook. It’s a cosy and comfy tea house to relax over great conversation and flavorful, steeped loose leaf teas. Warm color schemes and earthy finishings make for a calming atmosphere … Read More

Dae Bak Bon Ga Restaurant Review
by Taya on April 29th, 2010

Korean BBQ always brings me right back to our year living in Seoul: A haze of barbecue smoke filled the air in restaurants and Ajummas responded “neeeehh” when customers rang the service buzzer.  These were often the sights and sounds of our daily dining adventures.

Three years later, and I will occasionally have the urge to eat Korean food, even though I don’t particular love the cuisine! (I tend to find … Read More

Iki Japanese Restaurant Review
by Taya on April 23rd, 2010

Yes, we seem to eat a lot of Japanese food in Vancouver.  I guess that’s what happens when this beautiful city offers a sushi restaurant on almost every corner!

Approaching the end of my cleanse (no sugar, no salt, no dairy, etc.) last week, I thought Japanese would be a healthy choice for dinner.

How about brown rice sushi I said? Gary obliged and mentioned Iki Japanese Restaurant on Broadway, near MacDonald. … Read More

Bo Laksa King Review
by Taya on April 20th, 2010

We just returned from lunch at Bo Laksa King which was a perfect way to spice up this wet and dreary afternoon.  Bo Laksa King is a tiny restaurant inside Joyce-Way Food Market (4910 Joyce St. & Wellington), in East Vancouver. It’s run by Bo and his wife Tiffany, who are a warm and friendly couple.

Laksa is a flavorful and spicy noodle soup dish found throughout … Read More

Guu Thurlow Review
by Taya on April 19th, 2010

Guu is a Japanese Tapas restaurant with a few locations around Vancouver, and one in Toronto. We visited the original Guu on Thurlow (just south of Robson Street).

Let me start off by saying this place is lively and LOUD! The kind of noise that actually hurts your ears. I’ve been to Tokyo, but I don’t remember Izakayas being this loud.

I wanted out of Guu, but the food kept me from … Read More

Fresh Bowl Review
by Taya on April 17th, 2010

I had a craving for South East Asian food, as I often do after living there for 2 years when I was younger.  We were driving along Pacific Boulevard, heading to the downtown Costco and I noticed “Fresh Bowl – South East Asian”.  Perfect, I thought, we can try it for lunch after stocking up on the essentials at Costco.

The decor is bright and colorful with orange, white, and green … Read More
