Eugene’s Greek Restaurants have been popular on Vancouver Island for well over 30 years. They’re famous for their quick, tasty, and well-priced Greek dishes. When we lived in Victoria, we’d frequent their downtown location, but apparently, it has since closed – does anyone know when that happened? I guess we’ve been out of the loop! Currently, Eugene’s has three locations around Victoria in the Oak Bay, Gordon Head, and Colwood neighbourhoods.
On this visit to the island, we dined at Eugene’s Oak Bay restaurant, on the corner of Fort Street & Foul Bay Road. Both take-out and eat-in options are provided, with a lots of tables for both inside and al fresco dining.
Standard Greek items are on the menu including spanakopita, gyros, homous & pita, etc. – but their most popular dish would have to be their Chicken Souvlaki – You can either order it as just a wrap, or for a few dollars extra, you can order it with a side of Greek or Caesar salad. Eugene’s is cafeteria style restaurant, so you place your order the counter, pay, and then you’re given a number while you wait for your meal to be cooked.
To create the wrap, a marinated chicken breast skewer is cooked on the grill, right in front of you, and then it’s nestled in warm pita bread and tightly wrapped in paper. Plenty of sliced onions, ripe and juicy tomatoes, and a healthy dollop of their in-house creamy (and garlicy!) tzatziki sauce are included in the souvlaki wrap.
