Dunn’s Famous Review – Iconic Montreal Smoked Meat In Vancouver

An iconic Montreal smoked meat restaurant and delicatessen has opened its first western Canadian location in downtown Vancouver! That’s right, Dunn’s Famous – a truly loved Quebec institution founded in 1927 – is located in the lower lobby of the new Capital 6 building, on Seymour Street & Robson.

Dunn’s Famous is a family friendly establishment and offers a pleasant dining room. Its warm and inviting decor has lots of exposed brick and high ceilings.

The deli uses traditional recipes that include light rye sourdough bread and unique brine. Their meat is always hand sliced, prepared to order, and you have a choice of fat content. Dunn’s Famous Montréal smoked meat is a whole AA beef brisket crusted with special herbs and spices, hot smoked for 17 hours, steamed 3 hours to tender just before serving.

Rustic, ‘tree’ top tables bring outside elements in, but their sizes are a little too small. Two of Dunn’s plates don’t fit easily on one table and we had to move all the drinks and condiments to the table beside us.

Dunn’s special coleslaw with shredded cabbage and carrots in a house vinaigrette, and a kosher pickle.

Quebecoise Poutine – Cheese curds & Dunn’s special gravy. All Dunn’s poutines are made with hand cut Kennebec French fries (similar to White Spot fries) and served with fresh cheese curds.

Super Montreal Smoked Meat ($10.99) – This super sandwich consisted of 6 oz hand sliced smoked beef brisket on light sourdough rye with mustard, served with French fries (or house salad or featured soup) Dunn’s special coleslaw and a kosher pickle. We opted to substitute the French fries for poutine for an extra charge of $3.50 each. The poutine wasn’t spectacular; it was just ok. However, portion sizes of all dishes were very generous and the coleslaw was nice and light.

The smoked meat was thinly sliced, easy to eat, and there was lots of it! We appreciated that you have a choice of fat content in the meat – either lean, medium or fatty. This sandwich included the fatty meat, which melted in our mouths.

Even though we were stuffed from lunch, we couldn’t leave without a piece of their popular cheesecake to-go: Dunn’s Famous Strawberry Cheesecake ($7.99) – Original Montreal recipe baked in-house with fresh strawberries & strawberry sauce. This huge slice of smooth and creamy cheesecake had a lovely hint of lemon flavour, giving it a nice zing.

This isn’t Montreal or NYC, so Vancouver has a severe lack of smoked meat shops to choose from. However, Dunn’s Famous does a good job of filling the void as it will satisfy your smokey carnivorous cravings. You can even get Dunn’s Famous smoked meat sandwiches at the Costco Food Court in downtown Vancouver!
