Uprising Breads Bakery Kitsilano Review

Uprising Breads Bakery is an East Vancouver icon with over thirty years in business. It has a reputation for good quality baked goods made at its Venables Street location that can also be purchased in retail stores throughout the Lower Mainland. The company recently opened up a second shop a few months ago in Kitsilano. We spotted the cafe/bakery one morning while driving down West Broadway and decided to pop in for a quick breakfast.

The space is divided into three sections: a roomy sitting area with tables and chairs, an area with the packaged baked goods and sliced breads and a counter area with the cases of individual pastries and desserts (bars, pies, cookies, scones, muffins, tiramisu, croissants, cupcakes. etc.), homemade soups & sandwiches, and a full espresso bar managed by expert baristas.

A rare sight: Soy is provided alongside milk and cream for hot/cold coffee and tea beverages. This is a very nice touch and something that not even Starbucks offers!

Uprising serves Salt Spring Coffee which boasts being fair trade, organic and carbon neutral. We tried the drip coffee (which came with the slice of pie) and an Americano, and both were excellent.

The package of six Jumbo Gingersnap Cookies looked hard to resist – I’m a sucker for gingersnaps and gingerbread during the holidays.

And they certainly were difficult to resist: I ended up eating five out of the six in the bag! They were deliciously chewy and oh-so good.

This pain au chocolat, or chocolate croissant, was nice and flaky and had just the right amount of milk chocolate in its center.

A generous slice of scrumptious strawberry rhubarb pie along with a coffee only cost $2.99. Actually, all their baked good prices seemed below comparable shops in the neighbourhood. Seniors get to take advantage of even lower prices with a 10% seniors discount off everything, everyday. All items we sampled were superb and staff were friendly, so this place is well worth a repeat visit. Check it out! Love Uprising products but can’t stop to shop?
