Buns in the Sun has been a Big Island landmark for over 20 years with Kona’s best baked goods, including breads, cakes and pastries. They have become the “go-to” bakery and deli for breakfast and lunch for island residents and visitors alike.
Casual and laid back, Buns in the Sun is located in Lanihau Center, across the street from Kona Coast Shopping Center (where we enjoyed Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Orange Tree, and Ba Le).
Since they’re open daily from 5:00am, they brew locally-grown 100% Kona coffee to satisfy morning caffeine fiends. We weren’t up that early, but we did both start our day with a mouth-watering breakfast sandwich, called The Big Bird – Made with a freshly baked croissant and topped with two fluffy, scrambled eggs, extra crispy bacon, thick sliced turkey, and Swiss cheese. These sandwiches were huge and very tasty. Our only gripe was that they used possessed cheese.
Feel like something sweet? This local bakery makes tons of tasty pastries to choose from – bear claws, pies, cinnamon rolls, scones, brownies, muffins, danishes, etc. Since it’s the Big Island of Hawaii, we had to order a couple of Macadamia Nut White Chocolate Cookies. They were super moist and chewy, with just the right amount of sweetness.
For lunch, they offer made-to-order cold or grilled sandwiches (all made from their fresh, daily baked breads), and salads brimming with delectable fresh vegetables.
There’s only one small table provided inside, but seating is offered outside the bakery. The outdoor view is of the parking lot, so we took our breakfasts to the beach!
