The sweet treat known in Malaysia as “the father of all buns” has made its way to North America and found a home in Canada on Vancouver’s Robson Street. PappaRoti has opened its doors and is serving up its signature Original Coffee Bun along with great JJ Bean Coffee and whole leaf teas blended just for the cafe.
PappaRoti was started in 2003 by a mother who wanted to take traditional roti (bread) and turn it into a sweet treat for her son. After some experimentation she perfected a coffee-caramel coated bun that delighted her child and all his friends. Since starting the business, it has now expanded to over 400 locations worldwide. The bun has become a favorite of all who try it, so the Vancouver cafe is a welcomed sight to those who have previously enjoyed this dessert and crave its sweet aroma.
The buns are made all throughout the day in small batches so you’re going to get one that is fresh and probably still warm from the oven. Digging in to this treat I was hit with the smell of childhood – the combination of ingredients give this dessert the aroma of pancakes, butter and maple syrup! It was like cracking an eggshell when cutting into the outer layer of the bun and inside I was met with a nice soft center that was stuffed with a knob of butter. You can get a bun alone or choose from a selection of sides like local organic jams, fresh fruit, Nutella, maple syrup, honey, whipped cream, ice cream, dark chocolate, caramel, or even kaya (coconut spread popular in Malaysia). A different choice is the Pappa cream cheese, which is a unique option that brings out savory qualities of the bun.
The cafe is large and spacious with room for you to bring your laptop. This PappaRoti is open until 11pm so you can conquer your sweet tooth craving in the evening. With a unique and delicious product, PappaRoti is a great addition to the dessert options in the city and a welcomed establishment to the West End of Vancouver.
