September of this year marked the 10th anniversary of Memphis Blues Barbecue House in Vancouver. The popular barbeque chain was started by local Vancouverites George Siu and Park Heffelfinger back in 2001 at their West Broadway location.
We were invited to partake in the festivities as Memphis Blues put on a 10th anniversary celebration dinner at their West Broadway location on November 8th. What was on the menu? A locally-sourced Whole Hog Dinner (or what’s known as a Carolina Hog Pickin’)! Vegans, you might want to stop reading right about now.
I ending up catching the tail end of the event, and by the time I arrived two applewood-smoked hogs had been devoured by the crowd full of family, friends and media, enjoying drinks and blues music. The pig at the front had been picked to the bone! The only thing left was the head, and the scene looked like something from Lord of the Flies.
At the event Park made a short speech summing up the years at Memphis Blues, and it was great to see so many supporters of the restaurant soak up every word.
What’s next for these guys? Stay tuned for Memphis Blues Rubs and Sauces coming this Winter, new menu additions, and an upcoming food challenge for Vancouverites. In ten years, six locations have emerged across BC, an upcoming store is coming in downtown Vancouver before Christmas, with further expansion to hit Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
When people think of barbecue in Vancouver, Memphis Blues comes to mind for many. Congrats fellas, looking forward to another ten years!
