Tucked away in one of the ubiquitous strip malls in the Whalley area of Surrey, you’ll find Mahek Restaurant & Lounge. This local gem serves quality East Indian cuisine in a more upscale and modern, yet comfortable family-oriented atmosphere. Staff are friendly and attentive at Mahek, while its dining room feels nice and private since most of the tables are cozy booth seating.
Often voted one of the top Indian restaurants in town, Mahek serves a wide selection of fine Indian curries, tandoori dishes, breads, and vegetarian items — using fresh ingredients and following traditional recipes from authentic Indian cooking.
On this occasion at Mahek, we each ordered drinks, meat dishes and naan bread: A nice feature, usually only found at Boston Pizza or Red Robbins, is that their fountain pop ($2.50) comes with complimentary refills. Naan ($1.50) – Served hot, this traditional North Indian bread baked in a Tandoor oven was soft and fluffy, yet chewy and little crispy along the rim. Garlic Naan ($1.95) – Regular, delicious naan bread garnished with butter, garlic and herbs. Mahek’s Butter Chicken ($11.95) was very good and included pieces of Tandoori roasted moist and juicy chicken breast swimming in rich and creamy tomato gravy. Lamb Tikka Masala ($11.95) – Very tender, boneless lamb pieces simmered in a rich tomato gravy with multidimensional flavours including subtle hints of coriander. This dish had an adequate amount of spiciness without being too hot.
Price are decent and portions are generous, but if you don’t feel like dining-in, you can order take out and enjoy 10% off your meal. Have a look at their online menu for a complete selection of tasty items. Overall, Mahek Restaurant & Lounge serves satisfying Indian cuisine – including solid curries, tender Tandoori items and fresh naan breads – and provides great service in a comfortable atmosphere.
