Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is a Japanese chain of ramen restaurants with multiple locations around Asia and North America. Since our last visit to Hokkaido Ramen Santouka in Vancouver, the company has been specifically conquering South East Asia with expansion into Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and even Taiwan. With so many shops on two continents, we were interested in seeing how consistent the restaurants would be and decided to visit the Toronto location for lunch during our recent trip to Ontario.
Toronto’s Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is one of the newest locations, having only opened its doors late last year. Situated on Dundas Street in the downtown core, it’s housed in a red brick building near Ryerson University. With dark walls, exposed ceilings with wooden beams, and light bulb lamps hanging from long wires, the space has an almost hipster-ish decor which seems to mesh well with its college crowd clientele. Compared to its Vancouver counterpart, portion size, price, and service are all comparable. And in terms of taste, this restaurants provides the same flavorful and rich miso and shoyu broths, slightly chewy ramen noodles and extremely tender melt-in-your-mouth slices of pork jowl. Well done Santouka — you’re still one of our favorites!
