Burgoo is food for comfort. This casual bistro offers a tantalizing menu of satisfying comfort food favourites. Each item lists which country the dish originates from, and its offerings span the globe. From Vietnamese banh mi sandwices to Irish meat stews to Indian Vindaloo to Paella from Spain to Moroccan dishes from Africa, and even good ol’ American Mac & Cheese. You’re bound to find a food you fancy.
Soup & Sandwich ($15) – All Burgoo sandwiches are priced at $12 each, but if you want to add a soup, it’s only three dollars more. Open faced, this sandwich was served on a toasted multigrain baguette and was topped with melted brie cheese, grilled chicken, red onion, cucumber, and mixed greens. Borscht soup was tangy and flavourful with a swirl of sour cream and lovely chunks of beet. Portion sizes are substantial at Burgoo so it would be difficult to leave hungry.
Beef Bourguignon ($18) – A traditional French favourite consisting of red wine braised beef with caramelized pearl onions, carrots and mushrooms over garlic mash potatoes. A generous portion and tender meat and plenty of vegetables, this dish was a hearty, comforting meal.
Despite the fact that we were full from our meal, one sweet treat caught our eye: Hot Chocolate Chili Pot ($5) – A Mexican influenced dessert including warm bittersweet chocolate custard with a hint of spice. Topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the hot and cold contrast was a delicious sensation paired with the spiciness of the subtle chili flavour.
