While we were in Victoria, we had drinks & dessert at Bon Rouge with our recently engaged friends Emmy & Justin. Located in a 1920’s building on Courtney Street in downtown Victoria, Bon Rouge Bistro & Lounge is a beautifully decorated Parisian bistro style restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed and offers French-inspired comfort food to indulge the senses.
Bon Rouge is a considerably large space. With both a bistro side and restaurant side of the establishment, it also offers upper and lower patio dining. The above photo is part of the outside upper patio area.
This is the main entrance to Bon Rouge Bistro & Lounge. Strangely, you must enter through the kitchen, as seen in the above photo, and then turn right to access “les toilettes”.
Crème Brûlée ($8.00) – vanilla cream with a dark chocolate truffle. It was an interesting side-by-side pairing. I felt the truffle was more of a garnish and not something to necessarily mention on the menu. The vanilla cream custard was relatively thin, almost diluted in texture, and it had an ‘eggy’ taste…not the dense creamy custard I was expecting. The top layer of hard caramelized sugar was perfect, and not blackened – as can often occur by an over zealous blowtorcher.
Our friend’s Raspberry Cheesecake (also $8.00) with a chocolate crust and white chocolate ganache was a vibrant pink hue and looked delectable. Our regular and decaf coffees were $2.95 each and steeped teas were $2.50 – all reasonably priced for such an establishment.
Overall, I was charmed by Bon Rouge’s decor and lovely romantic atmosphere, so we’ll most likely return to sample their dinner offerings.
Tip: On “Wine Wednesdays” they offer a selection of wine by the glass for only $5.00 each.
