Helen's Grill & Restaurant on Main St and King Edward

I’ve driven past Helen’s Grill & Restaurant on Main and King Edward many times. The place looks really old school from the outside and whenever I’ve walked by, the portions have looked humongous. So, we finally decided to give Helen’s Grill a try.

Helen’s Grill was fairly busy on a Saturday afternoon. We stopped in and the feel and smell was that of an old diner, which is hard to come by nowadays in Vancouver. We waited a few minutes and were seated in a booth promptly (which also lets you play/control music!). Service staff is more mature, giving you the no frill old school service.

We both decided on the breakfast special which included two eggs, pancakes, and bacon for $6.95.

The bacon was okay, the eggs were fine, but the pancakes were definitely off. They were way too flaky and fell apart too easily. It almost tasted like it was raw but not quite. Very hard to explain. The waitress politely asked us if we wanted to get another order, which was nice of her but we had an appointment and could not wait any longer.

The decor inside Helen’s Grill is very classic, with a long bar. They serve everything from breakfast, lunch, to dinner, and even Greek food. This is your typical greasy spoon and afterwards we decided we would not be giving Helen’s another try. That’s just us. How did your experiences fare?

Total experience: 2.5/5 on overall value, taste, ambiance.
