Milano Coffee & Gelato opened earlier this year, taking over the space previously occupied by Mum’s Gelati on Denman Street. Located right next door to one of our favourite Korean restaurants, Ma Dang Goul, this espresso bar and gelato shop is one of the West End’s newest residents.
This was our first encounter with Milano Coffee, but we learned it’s a boutique coffee roaster based in Vancouver. The coffee company’s 8th Ave. location, where they roast their beans on site, offers a unique coffee concept found nowhere else: espresso ‘on tap’. It’s Vancouver’s one and only ‘espresso tasting bar’ providing customers with a sample of eight different espresso blends! Another thing that sets Milano Coffee apart is that they source, hand roast and blend 9 espresso blends that contain anywhere from 6 – 12 different origin coffees. They support small farm estates and certified organic coffees whenever possible. However, they first rate coffee by cup quality, so there is up to 70% certified organic coffee beans in each of their espresso blends.
Most recently, Milano Coffee launched a shop in Gastown, complete with a liquor license and a DJ table for its sleek space. Doesn’t that sound fun, music + coffee + booze!
I really like the aesthetics of Milano Coffee’s Denman location – clean lines, fresh decor, and a bright and chill space. Right as we entered the shop, we were struck by a gorgeous espresso maker. Not only was the sleek machine pretty to look at, it also created the most incredibly smooth and sweet espresso. Although it is a rather tiny shop with bar stools along the window counters and a 4 top table at the front, there is additional seating available outside. We’ve been in a second time since our first encounter, both times ordering iced Americanos. Prices were what you would expect from a higher end boutique coffee roaster. I’ll definitely return, and make sure I check out their Gastown and Mt. Pleasant locations!
