East Meets West At Harvest Community Foods

Harvest Community Foods, under the culinary leadership of chef Andrea Carlson, has taken a new menu direction this season.

“Speaking to the neighbourhood, given that we border Chinatown, I thought it would be fun to shift towards a noodle concept,” says Andrea. “I wanted to make the menu a little bit more modern and super easy for take away with the store being on a bike route.”

The menu is very much “east meets west” as it emphasizes a fusion of traditional Asian comfort food dishes made with fresh ingredients from local growers that you would find at Vancouver Farmers Markets. The compact menu follows the changing seasons to offer fresh, flavourful and convenient meals.

Harvest’s fall/ winter menu features four deliciously heart-warming noodle dishes including udon with sake kazu chicken, watercress and shiitake, a vegan udon with shiso plum, tofu and shiitake, a vegan rice noodle with almond and smoked chili greens, and ramen (pictured above) with pork belly, radish, watercress, egg, and candied bacon.

Harvest Community Foods’ menu also carries a Vietnamese pork and pate banh mi sandwich, a yuzu chicken steam bun, and a gluten‐free corn and cilantro steam bun.

The dishes are simple, hearty and pleasing to many palettes. “There’s been an incredible response to the new menu at Harvest. It’s super casual, super tasty,” says Andrea. “So far I’m really delighted to see how involved the local community is in food. They really appreciate the products we use and that we’re approaching things with a different attitude.”

Eating in Vancouver & the World was recently invited to sample Harvest Community Foods’ new menu and experience the little local boutique eatery. So our contributing photographer, Joann Pai, stopped by Harvest and was given the chance to try their pork belly ramen.

Joann very much enjoyed the flavourful dish and appreciated that the bowl was accompanied by charred cayenne chili oil on the side for an extra spicy kick. Additionally, she was given the option of either regular or fatty broth, and went with the former for a lovely, light lunch.

Harvest Community Foods is located at 243 Union Street and is open Monday through Friday from 11AM to 8PM and Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 6PM.  Harvest Community Foods on Urbanspoon
