The first Chipotle Mexican Grill to hit the west coast of Canada officially opens tomorrow in Vancouver. For Chipotle fans, 11AM at 818 Howe Street is probably calling your name fairly soon, as the official grand opening is scheduled for tomorrow.
Eating in Vancouver was invited by Chipotle to come take a first look at their new location and try out their menu. We visited around dinner time to try out the menu and get a glimpse of what Vancouverites have been patiently counting down for.
For those who aren’t familiar with Chipotle, the company strives itself on sourcing local farms for both its meats and produce, part of the company’s “Food with Integrity” Vision, which seeks to get products from within 350 miles (560KM) of locations.
With a passion for doing the right thing, Chipotle uses ethically raised and hormone free meat and poultry. All items used in the restaurant are prepared fresh everyday and made in small batches throughout the day–so you’re assured only the freshest ingredients are going into your meal.
The menu has burritos, bowls, tacos and salads for you to choose from. Next, you fill it with chicken, steak, carnitas (shredded roasted pork), barbacoa (slow stewed beef) or make it vegetarian. After that, you get top it off with mouth-watering salsas like roasted chili-corn, tomatillo green chili or the traditional fresh tomato salsa. Prices start at $8.95, which is of course higher than what you’d pay in the USA. That’s just the Canadian way.
You can’t really go wrong with what you choose protein-wise but the carnitas was packed with flavour and melted in my mouth. The chicken burrito packs enough ingredients to fill even a seasoned eater like Alvin Lee up for the afternoon. To round out your meal don’t forget to grab an order of fresh guacamole and hand cut chips a try.
