For the first VANEATS.ca dining pass of 2013, I swung by Mount Pleasant last week to preview the new #SalivEIGHT package at Eight 1/2 Restaurant and Lounge. Alongside featured food writer and photographer extraordinaire Sean Neild we ordered two packages to provide a more comprehensive look at this new deal.

Although Sean and I ordered two different packages, we decided to share one flight of beer. This pass is actually intended for two people to share which is why the flight is split so evenly. Although I am not a big beer drinker, I loved how smoothly the light beer complimented the various dishes in this pass. Whether you are on a date or just grabbing a bite with a buddy, this selection will hit the spot with whatever dish variation you choose.
As we nursed our beer, we were served the Dungeness Crab Cakes and the Baked Brie to share. I was really surprised by how large the crab cakes were and how pure the contents were. The breading is kept very light and crisp which really highlights just how much crab meat is packed into each serving. There is also a nice serving of arugula served alongside the two crab cakes which makes this a very well-rounded appetizer.
For our second appetizer, we decided to go with the parcel wedge of filo wrapped baked brie with penne french bread. I know I speak for both Sean and I when I say this dish was simply phenomenal. Upon our first cut, the brie came oozing out and spread beautifully on the fresh bread. I rarely have brie for lunch and this dish definitely made me wonder why. So velvety smooth and rich, this was arguably the high point of the entire meal for me.
Of the three pizza options, we decided to go with the 8th Avenue and Market Place pizzas. Overall, both pizzas were very good, presenting thin and light foundations but loaded with quality ingredients. Towards the centre of each pizza, I did notice a few slices got a bit soggy but I didn’t really mind. Regardless of whether you are a meat lover or vegetarian, this dining pass can be catered to your specific tastes. I will have to make a return visit to try the Wild Smoked Salmon which looks great as well.
