The Urban Tea Merchant in downtown Vancouver is the exclusive Canadian Distributor for TWG Tea, the finest luxury tea brand in the world. Its exquisite Boutique & Tea Salon on Alberni Street features TWG teas and accessories along with aromatic tea infused patisseries and delicious gourmet meals.
We were kindly invited by The Urban Tea Merchant to experience their new Sakura Westcoast Tea Service along with a private tea tasting session with their very own Certified Tea Sommelier.
We started off the tea tasting experience at the Tea Bar with Tea Sommelier, Reza Nasooti. During the informative session Reza treated us to three different teas, including the timeless classic — TWG Tea’s renowned signature blend 1837 Black Tea. It’s a quietly sophisticated tea infused with fruits and flowers from the Bermuda triangle which leaves a lingering aftertaste of ripe berries, anise, and caramel flavours.
We also tried two new Haute Couture TWG Teas in shades of white and celadon, coinciding with the arrival of spring by highlighting ambrosial pastel blossoms and delicate green buds. The limited edition hand plucked White Spring Tea is a rare, downy Yin Zhen white tea blended with luscious flowers and is considered the champagne of teas. Sakura! Sakura! Tea is a fragrant green tea that is heavy with the headiness of cherry blossoms, evoking Kyoto’s most celebrated season.
After our tea tasting session, the lovely Sakura Westcoast Tea Service commenced. An ode to spring, it’s The Urban Tea Merchant’s newest special tea theme showcasing cherry blossoms blooming in their courtyard through March and April. Featuring Sakura! Sakura! Tea, the beautifully plated, hand-crafted piece of art is dressed in sumptuous savouries and sweets inspired by the Westcoast with touches of Japanese fusion.
We also enjoyed the Haute Couture Tea Party Tea, a rich, warm and golden black tea infused with subtle notes of candied sweetness. This was a perfect blend to pair with dessert.
The sweets on the gorgeous platter included TWG Tea infused macarons, TWG Tea chocolate bonbons, chevron strawberries, and chocolate dipped matcha madeleines. Savouries included miso-maple glazed sable fish in butter lettuce, “Lapsang Souchong Tea” chicken spoons, wasabi and smoked salmon with ponzu jelly, and “Sakura! Sakura! Tea” seared tuna tataki.
Focusing on fresh Westcoast seafood with touches of Eastern influence, along with delectable treats, Chef Michael did an impeccable job of tying in tea-infused items. This very thoughtfully prepared menu using top notch ingredients makes it stand apart from other tea services offered in Vancouver. At the end of the day, you realize why people keep returning for this delightful TWG Tea experience. It’s an indulgent luxury that is certainly worth it!
