Market Red Event @ Edible Canada

Granville Island is known worldwide for having some of Vancouver’s freshest and best produce, meat and everything else food related. With Edible Canada at the Market‘s opening, eating local and Canadian has never been easier or better. The Edible Canada team have taken things up a notch with the addition of Market Red — a delicious, drinkable red wine that is sure to please any wine lover.

Okanagan Crush Pad was honored to craft a special wine for Edible Canada. Head winemaker, Michael Bartier, worked with the Edible Canada team to come up with 100 cases of a beautifully blended red wine made from Gamay Noir grapes grown at Secrest Mountain Vineyards in Oliver, and Syrah grapes from Cerqueira Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. The label reflects Edible’s headquarters at the heart of Granville Island.

Okanagan Crush Pad is a winery located in Summerland, BC and is home to house labels Haywire, Bartier Scholefield, plus many custom crush clients. The licensed winery has been designed to facilitate production of multiple small lots of wine from many different sources, and the management of Okanagan Crush Pad welcomes clients seeking to use the facility’s specialized equipment. In 2011, Okanagan Crush Pad processed 225 tonnes (17,000 cases) for their own wines and nine clients. Today, the winery is at capacity with 450 tonnes (33,750 cases) for 12 clients.

Bright, pure cherry, perfumed wild raspberry, and cracked pepper notes were detected from first sniff of the wine through its lingering finish. This 80% Gamay / 20% Syrah blend comes from spectacular vineyards in the South Okanagan. It was barrel aged for 10 months in thin-stave aged French oak. I got to speak with Treve Ring who is the Director of Liquid Assets and she gave me some great insight into the thought behind this blend — “We crafted this fresh, spicy and savory red to pair with our Bistro fare and some of our favorite products from the market – namely heritage pork, BC salmon and wild mushrooms”.

At the launch, they served up some delicious dishes that indeed paired beautifully with the wine. The dishes offered were an amazing Wild Pine Tree Mushroom Consume, a Wild Salmon Wellington, and just to guild the lilly, a whole roasted Heritage Spotted Pig from Fiore Farms was carved up into delectable sliders. Not to forget, the Crush Pad white a Chicken Liver and Foie Gras Mousse on Crispy Chicken Skin was passed around the room to rave reviews.

Market Red is available on the wine list at Edible Canada and you can also pick it up in smaller, specialty wine shops. Price wise it’s coming in at just under $25/bottle and is limited edition to 100 cases total.
