Da Poke Shack Review (Kona, Hawaii)

Drive a little ways past the main downtown area in Kona and you’ll discover Da Poke Shack. It’s like a little local fish market that serves beer and soda, and multiple varieties of poke. Poke (meaning “to slice”) is a raw fish (usually tuna) salad served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine. Da Poke Shack’s poke is exceptionally fresh and there are different preparations to choose from. They offer plenty of yummy sides to accompany your poke, and Da Poke Shack provides white rice and brown rice as a healthier alternative. There are a couple of ways to order your poke:

  • Poke Bowl ($8.50) – 1/3 lbs poke, 1 side, 1 scoop of brown or white rice
  • Poke Plate ($16.50) – 2/3 lbs poke, 2 sides, 2 scoops of brown or white rice

When you are ordering make sure you take advantage of the option to sample before buying.  That way, you can pick your favorites before getting a whole container.

We can attest to the fact that Da Poke Shack is consistent: We returned a couple days later and tried the Spicy Poke Bowl – it was equally as fresh and delicious as our previous meals. The poke melted in our mouths!

The only downside is that this place is literally a shack. There is no inside seating and only a couple of picnic tables out front. Instead, grab your poke and head down to Magic Sands beach and watch the sunset while enjoying your meal. But get here early. Da Poke Shack is open daily from 10am to 6pm, but they sell out of a lot of poke by that time. Da Poke Shack is a definite must if your on this side of the Big Island!
