I fondly recall all the yummy British and Australian chocolate and candy that we used to indulged in while I lived in Brunei when I was younger. My all time favourite chocolate bar was Cadbury Top Deck – silky milk chocolate on the bottom and creamy, milky white chocolate on top.
Luckily for me, there is a fantastic little British shop on the lower mainland offering many treats from my childhood. Mary’s British Home Store in Steveston has a large variety of Cadbury chocolates like Flake and Fudge, as well as other British sweets like Fruit Pastilles – all reasonably priced at $1.75.
Located across the street from Ichiro (a really great Japanese restaurant), Mary’s British Home Store is owned by an elderly English lady, called Mary, or course! The store has been a staple for both the local area and greater Vancouver UK expat communities for well over twenty years. Apart from delectable English sweets and treats, Mary’s is also known in for its large selection of traditional British food such as Devon cream, Scotch pies, Scotch eggs, mince tarts, Melton Mowbray pies, haggis, blood sausage, steak & kidney pies, and a excellent varieties of English teas, jams, cereals, biscuits, etc. English potato chip enthusiasts will marvel in their UK flavours of crisps, like roast chicken. Check it out the next time you’re craving something from across the pond! (Also try The Diner in Point Grey for home-cooked British fare).
