Shiro Japanese Restaurant Review

Shiro is a little gem amongst a plethora of sushi restaurants in Vancouver. It’s located on Cambie Street, in the Fairview area of Vancouver.

We arrived right at 5:00pm on a Thursday night (yes we occasionally eat at seniors times) and by 5:10pm the restaurant was full. Seemed like there were a lot of regular customers and when we left, there was a line up out the door.

Notice the vibrant color of the salmon? You can definitely tell it’s wild. (They only serve wild salmon). Can you believe farmed salmon have to be fed dyes to make their flesh a red color? Anyway, I digress…The sashimi was exceptionally fresh and tasty.

I’m used to eating gomaae with a peanut or sesame sauce on the spinach.  This had neither, just sesame seeds and bonito flakes.  I couldn’t taste any other seasoning – it was quite bland.  However, I felt so healthy eating this dish as it was simple and refreshing. I think it countered nicely with the deep fried chicken wings and tempura (forgot the photo, sorry!)

Perfectly cooked rice with just the right amount of vinegar, and real crab meat. It’s not mentioned on their menu, but they only serve real wasabi – none of that neon-green gunk that comes from a tube.

The service at Shiro was excellent and the menu offered relatively inexpensive prices.  Becoming a rarity in Vancouver, Shiro actually has Japanese front and back of the house staff. (A large number of sushi restaurants in Vancouver are Chinese or Korean). So it’s definitely a nice change to have the Japanese experience once in a while.  The servers even present the bill to you with a pack of chocolate Pocky! Overall, a great authentically Japanese sushi restaurant in Vancouver.
