Maruwa Sushi Japanese Restaurant is located right beside Tim Hortons in the strip-mall along Steveston Highway, between No. 5 Road and Shell Road. Unlike most places in Vancouver proper, ample complimentary parking is conveniently available right out front of this Richmond restaurant. We’ve eaten at Maruwa plenty of occasions over the years, as my sister-in-law introduced us to the place; she knows the owner, so we always receive first-class service.
Authentic Japanese sushi is hard to find, but luckily Maruwa is a Japanese owned and operated establishment. And with plenty of AYCE sushi joints in the area, Maruwa is one of the few a la carte Japanese restaurants in Richmond. It’s a great spot for lunch or dinner, but the downside is that they are always busy. And another downside is that seating is limited as it’s a really little space. Usually, there are always lineups, so you’ll need to call in early to make reservations during lunch hours, and definitely call ahead for dinner as well.
Fresh high quality ingredients is what Maruwa is known for. Crisp bright green freshly steamed edamame is sprinkled with coarse sea salt. Even their miso soup continually tastes as if it was just made. Maruwa’s vegetable tempura never possesses too much batter and its tempura dipping sauce is always served nice and hot. Uni and unagi sushi are consistently popular as is their chopped scallop roll – which some claim is the best in the area.
Bento boxes are usually only available for lunch orders, but are reasonably priced at around $8.00. Sushi rolls are on the smaller side compared to other sushi restaurants. Furthermore, they’re always freshly rolled, contain a thin layer of rice (which we prefer), and the rice itself is always well seasoned with plenty of vinegar. The only downside for us, is that the seaweed is a tad too chewy for our liking. However, I know others who prefer the seaweed having this particular texture. Sashimi is limited in selection because Maruwa only uses the freshest cuts of tuna and salmon. Grilled fish of the day are charred nicely, retaining moist and juicy flesh on the interior.
Overall, Maruwa Sushi is a great little authentic Japanese restaurant in Richmond that focuses on quality versus quantity. All their menu items are consistently fresh!
