Iki Japanese Restaurant Review

Yes, we seem to eat a lot of Japanese food in Vancouver.  I guess that’s what happens when this beautiful city offers a sushi restaurant on almost every corner!

Approaching the end of my cleanse (no sugar, no salt, no dairy, etc.) last week, I thought Japanese would be a healthy choice for dinner.

How about brown rice sushi I said? Gary obliged and mentioned Iki Japanese Restaurant on Broadway, near MacDonald. We decided to order take-out since we still had some work to finish up.

Chicken Breast Teriyaki ($8.50) was served with rice, yam fries, salad, and miso soup. The yam fries were basically just yam tempura drizzled with a balsamic reduction and served with a hollandaise dipping sauce on the side. Gary thought the fries had too much batter. The chicken teriyaki was the standard fair you’d receive from any other Japanese restaurant – good, but nothing mind blasting.

Sashimi and Roll Combo ($9.50) included 3 piece salmon, 3 piece tuna sashimi, and a Dynamite Roll. Fresh, ample portion size and well-priced.  What more could you ask for?

Brown rice California roll ($3.00), Tofu roll ($4.00) and Veggie roll ($3.00). Normally brown rice seems really heavy to me (although I cook it all the time at home and attempt to feed it to Gary!) but this brown rice was actually quite light. Although the tofu rolls were tasty, they were also a little soggy.  I would suggest they drain the tofu longer before they assemble the roll.  The avocado in the California roll was perfectly ripe. The ‘red cabbage’ that was supposed to be in my veggie roll was replaced with mixed greens.  I was a little disappointed considering I had ordered this maki specifically for the cancer fighting cabbage!

After not eating sugar in over a week, I welcomed the sweetest of the Gomae-ae ($2.50).

Overall, Iki is a very reasonably priced Japanese restaurant for the quality and portion size of the food.  Next time we’ll be back to dine-in to review their service and ambiance.
