Tropical Taco, located in the Halele’a Building in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii, is a little taco shack serving up the best tacos on that side of the garden isle.
Tropical Taco offers freshly prepared ingredients, made every day, and all their fish is caught by local North Shore fisherman. We enjoyed our fish tacos on the outdoor stools and had spectacular views of tropical flowers, swaying palms trees and misty mountains. We also watched locals drive by with surfboards hanging out of their jeeps – heading to the North Shore to catch a wave, no doubt.
Baja Fish Tacos Special ($11) – two tacos dipped in beer battered ono fish, fried to a crispy, golden brown, topped “baja-style” with grated white cabbage, fresh tomato salsa, onions, cilantro, and spicy mayo. Served with corn taco chips, and refried beans topped with shredded cheddar cheese. Sure, they weren’t the cheapest tacos we’ve ever had (nothing’s cheap on Kauai!), but they were darn good and a well sized portion.
I appreciated their cautionary slogan:
!!! WARNING !!! Not to be consumed one hour before surfing
Hang loose, man 😉
We even had a couple avian dining companions. They wandered freely in and out of the laid-back joint, and were actually pretty cute chickens.
If you’re driving to the North Shore, stop by Tropical Taco for a tasty lunch. Mahalo!
