Although their unique toppings like bonito flakes, miso mayo and tiny strips of nori are delicious, I think Japadog is overpriced and over-hyped. I find their buns to be slightly dry and bordering on stale.
Personally, I don’t enjoy chewy frankfurter casings, and I’d honestly prefer a hot dog from Costco! Funnily enough, according to Garjons’ review on Urbanspoon, Japadog buys all their ingredients from Costco. So shouldn’t their dogs actually taste better than they do?
Incidentally, we also tried Puka Dog (more like puke-a dog) Hawaiian style hot dogs in Kauai, and liked them even less. I’m beginning to wonder about Anthony Bourdain’s taste in food because he raved about both dog joints.
Let’s face it, Japadog’s a gimmick. They lure you in with long line-ups and photos of celebrities like Ice Cube and Steven Seagal. Japadog has genius marketing and business sense – I’ll give ’em that! What do you think about Japadog? Love it or leave it?
