Breakfast, especially brunch, is my favorite meal of the day. I love the idea of brunch. Not early enough for breakfast at the crack of dawn, but not late enough that I can’t order a large stack of pancakes. So we walked into Abigail’s Party (next to Cafe Zen on Yew) to get our brunch on, only to discover they weren’t open until 5pm and only serve brunch on weekends. Luckily for me, Joe’s Grill on 4th Ave. in Kits offers all day breakfast. If you’ve pulled an all-nighter and want your brunch at 3pm, you can get it at Joe’s.
Joe’s Grill also has two locations in the West End, one on Davie and the other on Denman. Their Kits location is a classic, casual diner with ample seating and lots of comfy booths. Upon entrance, a sign stated to seat ourselves, but only if the table had already been cleaned. Service was quite basic and the kitchen cooked up our meals very quickly. Coffee was excellent and our waitress was always around to pour us extra refills.
Shrimp Benny ($8.75) – poached eggs with cold water baby shrimp and hollandaise, on a toasted English muffin. They did not skimp on the shrimp! The hollandaise was a tad bland, but still tasty nonetheless. It was a pleasant surprised that they served real potato hashbrowns and not some freezer, store-bought brand.
Waffle Combo ($8.95) – two waffles, two strips of bacon, two sausage links, two eggs any style, and a bowl of fresh fruit. The waffles were a little soft so I would have preferred if they were more crisp on the outside. They tasted like they were store-bought and then popped into the toaster oven. However, the bacon was crispy and the sausage was the quality you’d expect for standard diner fare. For the price and amount of food, it was a pretty great deal if you ask me.
Open daily from 8am-5pm, Joe’s Grill in Kits is a great spot for standard diner breakfast and lunch offerings. Check it out the next time you’re unwilling to wait in line at Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe down the street.
