In the heart of historic Kailua-Kona town on the Big Island of Hawaii, just passed the Farmers Market, lies a delightful landmark called Waterfront Row. This charming two level nautical complex is easily distinguished by its blue roof, one hundred foot glass windowed lookout tower, and a giant three ton iron anchor at its doorstep.
Waterfront Row, with its rich heritage and maritime splendor, has been gracing the Kailua coastline along Alii Drive for nearly 40 years. Looking out toward the bay at Kailua Pier, this rustic nautical treasure boasts some of the most awesome ocean views of crashing waves and spectacular sunsets. Waterfront Row is considered a “must see” shopping and dining destination point in Kailua–Kona.
Perhaps the most famous of the shops at Waterfront Row is Wyland Kona Oceanfront Gallery. The fine art gallery sits front and center right in between Bubba Gump and Blue Waiaka restaurants. Right beside it you’ll find Wyland Coffee Cafe serving shaved ice ($3.95) and ice cream ($3.95 single scoop/ $5.95 double scoop). They serve a large selection of Tropical Dreams Ice Cream (Made with Aloha!) which many claim is the best ice cream you can get in Kona as it is made right on the Big Island of Hawaii, and is the only ice cream with Hawaii’s prestigious Seal of Quality. Wyland Coffee Cafe also serves espresso beverages and 100% Kona coffee, pictured above: Organic dark roast 16 oz for $3.25 and a medium roast 12 oz for $2.75. Cups are complete with a map of the Hawaiian islands. No seating is provided inside this little cafe, so take your icy treats and smooth java to a nearby bench overlooking the ocean to take in the lovely tropical surroundings.
