It was such a beautiful sunny day on Saturday, so we headed over to West Vancouver for some brunch and beach action. The Bakehouse in Dundarave, located on Marine Drive between 24th and 25th streets (near Dundarave Beach), is a bakery and cafe offering breakfast and lunch options seven days per week. We walked into the busy, cute little cafe, ordered our brunch from the counter, and a grabbed a seat. We were enticed by their freshly baked breads, and made-from-scratch daily soups.
Condiments such as ketchup and homemade jam are offered for the taking on one counter, and ice water and a cream/sugar station for hot beverages are available on the other.
The Bakehouse has a homey feel with wooden tables and chairs, and warm color tones on the walls. Their coffee was excellent – although I’m unsure if they offer complimentary refills, as there were no dispensers and no one was making the rounds with a coffee carafe. It does, however, seem like the type of place that if you asked for a refill, I’m sure they’d happily oblige. On Saturdays and Sundays The Bakehouse offers their all day weekend brunch menu:
The Farmhouse ($11.95) – Two eggs any style, turkey sausage (or ham), roasted potatoes, grilled tomatoes, served with a muffin bite and mulitgrain toast. Now this is real food – complete with homemade bread and muffins! Roasted potatoes were crispy on the outside and hot ‘n soft in the middle. You could easily tell that high quality eggs and sausage were used, and the meal wasn’t greasy at all.
Posh Smoked Salmon Brunch ($13.95) – Two poached eggs atop savoury brioche, smothered with avocado, organic greens, red and green onions, wild BC smoked salmon, topped with tarragon dill sauce, served with roasted potatoes and mulitgrain toast. After I read the part about wild smoked smoked salmon and avocado on the menu – I was sold on this dish. I’m a sucker for anything with avocado. Since the menu listed “smothered with avocado”, I was expecting slices or chunks of avocado – but sadly it turned out to be a thin layer of avocado “spread” on top of the brioche. A little disappointing, but the entire meal was so delicious and fresh that I didn’t mind too much. I received a large portion of high quality ingredients, and the meal was incredibly tasty. Mmm the fresh dill was so bright and fragrant! I was in heaven.
The Bakehouse appears to treat they employees very well: A sign informed customers that the cafe would be closing early (at 3:00pm) on Saturday so that their staff could make it home in time to watch the hockey game! How kind.
Overall, The Bakehouse in Dundarave is an excellent breakfast, (brunch only on weekends), and lunch spot in West Vancouver with exceptionally fresh, homestyle food. Check it out the next time you’re in West Vancouver!
