Cafe Zen, as you would expect, is located on Yew Street (and 1st Ave. right near Kits Beach – look for the yellow awning) in Kitsilano. It has a perfect location and offers an excellent variety of breakfast items. When we moved from Victoria to Kitsilano a few years ago, our Realtor actually drove us past Cafe Zen and mentioned that it’s the best spot for breakfast in Kits. I made note of this tip and we’ve been frequenting this spot ever since. Thanks for the recommendation Steve!
Their French Toast is consistently incredible: light, fluffy, and they use thick cut bread. Cafe Zen has huge portions, so I often get the half order of French Toast with a side of fresh fruit ($7.59). Their fruit is freshly cut, not out of a big plastic pail like some other restaurants.
Their Eggs Benny are always a great choice as well. They have so many varieties to choose from like Crab Avocado Benedict ($12.19), and our following photo examples:
B.C. Benedict with Smoked Salmon ($11.99).
Above: California Benedict ($9.29) with avocado and tomato. Below: Eggs Benji-Mushroom ($9.79) with bacon.
Since portions are large, Cafe Zen allows you to order a half-order benny. For those with larger appetites, you can even mix and match your benny. Sometime I’ll order half California and half Eggs Flow-Greek (spinach and feta cheese). Yum!
The only downside to Cafe Zen is the tables are spaced very close together, so you’re basically dining on the lap of strangers. Also, the tables are super low, or maybe the chairs are too high – either way, it makes for a somewhat uncomfortable seating arrangement. Regardless, we come for the food! A great variety of breakfast items: buckwheat or buttermilk pancakes, waffles, French toast, omelets, vegetarian items, etc. – along with good service, and excellent coffee & espresso. You must put Cafe Zen on your list for your next Sunday brunch.
